Earrings became popular in Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, and were probably adopted from their southern neighbours in Nubia. Of considerable variety in both design and material men, women and children of both sexes wore earrings during the New Kingdom.
This rare pair of penannular earrings are each hand carved from a single piece of creamy alabaster, then carefully polished. They demonstrate one of the most expensive variety of hoop earring worn by members of the noble and royal families.
