the central decoration featuring the head of Medusa, with flowing hair and snake-like locks with two fern leaves above, a twisted rope border at the top and left of the scene.

Roman lead sarcophagi were unique to the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically Phoenicia. For similar lead sarcophagi, see p. 143-148 in McCann, Roman Sarcophagi in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Dimensions:  6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches (15.9 x 10.9 cm)

Condition:   Piece from a larger panel, in very good condition overall.
